Immaculate Heart of Mary Specialist Hospital, Nkpor was established in 1977 as an eight-bed maternity home by Rev. Mother Mary Joseph Uzoigwe with the primary aim of serving pregnant women. Recognizing the growing healthcare needs of the area, the facility was later expanded and relocated to a more secure and spacious site. The construction of a larger hospital building, was led by Sr. Mary Emmanuella Cordis Ezeobi and was completed in 1990. Although the establishment of private hospitals faced government restrictions at the time, the institution officially opened on 2nd February 1990 with the support of the then Commissioner for Health, Dr. P. I. Okolo, and received government approval in July 1990 registering as a 40-bed hospital and maternity. With a small but dedicated team, the hospital quickly earned the trust of the community, expanded its reach, and diversified its services. To meet the increasing demand for quality healthcare and modern facilities, a new hospital building project was later proposed. Construction of this new building began in 2019 under the leadership of Mother Mary Claude Oguh, with Sr. Mary Sapientiae Ameke serving as Councillor in charge and Sr. Dr. Maria Nkiruka Okafor as Chief Executive Officer of the Hospital, ushering in a new chapter in the hospital’s legacy of compassionate and excellent healthcare delivery. Immaculate Heart of Mary Specialist Hospital, Nkpor, Anambra State, was officially inaugurated as a 250 bed facility on Tuesday, 11th April 2023, marking a significant milestone in the congregation’s enduring mission to serve humanity through quality healthcare.
