October 31, 2025, we had the honor of hosting a high-powered delegation from the Pharmaceutical Council of Nigeria (PCN) at Immaculate Heart of Mary Specialist Hospital, Nkpor. The team was on site for the official accreditation assessment of our Pharmacy Department and our residency training program for Pharmacists. The delegation was warmly received by our Chief Executive Officer, Sr. Nkiruka C. Okafor, IHM, PhD. They were further engaged by the Deputy Chief Medical Director, Sr. Dr. Maria Stella Obioma, IHM, and the Head of the Pharmacy Unit, Sr. Dr. Petrina Ibekwe. The visit included a structured review of our pharmacy operations, drug distribution systems, documentation processes, human resources, and compliance with pharmaceutical regulatory standards. During the assessment, the team inspected our drug inventory management system, patient counseling process, sterile and non-sterile preparation environments, and our overall workflow designed to ensure patient safety and timely service delivery. They also interacted with our Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians, acknowledging the team’s competence, professionalism, and commitment to quality healthcare. We hope for a positive outcome of the visit even as we patiently await an official feedback from the Council. At IHM Specialist Hospital, we believe that high-quality pharmaceutical care is an essential pillar of patient safety. This accreditation positions us as a recognized training center for Pharmacists who are advancing their clinical careers, contributing to the growth of the healthcare workforce in Nigeria. Immaculate Heart of Mary Specialist Hospital, Nkpor has achieved another major milestone in its journey toward medical excellence. On May 29th, the hospital was granted full accreditation as a training centre for the Family Medicine Residency Program by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN). The accreditation visit was conducted by a two-man delegation from the College consisting of Dr. Fatai Olaniyan, Chairman of the Faculty of Family Medicine, and Dr. Samuel Adefemi, Secretary of the Faculty. During the visit, the team carried out a comprehensive tour of the facility, inspecting infrastructure, equipment, and residency training resources. They also interacted with members of staff across various departments to assess capacity and readiness for postgraduate medical training. Following the assessment, the hospital was awarded a full five-year accreditation, signifying compliance with the standards required to train Family Medicine Residents under the NPMCN. This achievement marks a new era for the hospital, positioning it as a key contributor to medical education in Nigeria and strengthening its commitment to producing highly skilled family physicians who will serve the region and beyond. The commissioning of this specialized room marks a significant advancement in the hospital’s continuous dedication to providing innovative, world-class care for newborns. The PoliteAnna Jaundiroom is a dedicated treatment facility for babies born with jaundice, a common neonatal condition characterized by elevated bilirubin levels that can be harmful when not managed promptly and effectively. This newly installed technology is a breakthrough solution developed from research and innovation emerging from Imperial College London, one of the world’s leading institutions in medical science and neonatal care. Purpose-built for Healing Unlike traditional phototherapy setups, the PoliteAnna Jaundiroom offers a controlled, baby-friendly environment that enhances recovery. IHM Specialist Hospital Nkpor Hosts VOOM Medical Outreach Immaculate Heart of Mary Specialist Hospital, Nkpor, recently played host to a distinguished medical team from VOOM Foundation USA during a 10-day Medical Outreach that ran from May 8th to May 18th, 2025. The collaboration marks a major milestone in the hospital’s commitment to expanding access to world-class healthcare in Southeast Nigeria. The VOOM Foundation team, comprising 15 medical specialists, brought expertise across multiple clinical fields including Family Medicine, Heart Surgeries, Eye Care and Surgeries, Dental Care, and other critical specialties. The mission began with a two-day Free Medical Outreach on May 8th and 9th. The outreach attracted an overwhelming turnout as individuals from surrounding communities and beyond sought care. Between consultations, minor procedures, diagnostics, and surgeries, the visiting team and the hospital’s clinical workforce attended to over 1,600 patients within the outreach and subsequent clinical activities during the mission. Patients received services ranging from routine checkups to highly specialized surgical interventions, care that many would typically have to travel abroad to access. The collaboration also provided hands-on training and knowledge transfer to the hospital’s medical personnel, strengthening local capacity for advanced care. Speaking on the impact of the partnership, hospital leadership expressed gratitude to VOOM Foundation for their dedication and emphasized the importance of ongoing relationships that improve patient outcomes and strengthen healthcare delivery in Nigeria. > “This mission reinforces our vision to make Immaculate Heart of Mary Specialist Hospital a center of excellence in healthcare in Southeast Nigeria.
